In Genesis 21, Sarah gives birth to Isaac, and while his name means “laughter”, there isn’t a great deal of laughter in the chapter. Sarah and Hagar and Abraham have a major conflict. What the Bible teaches us is that this conflict exists to reveal something powerful for our lives.
There is an old saying that says “He who laughs last, laughs loudest.” What we are going to learn is that Genesis 21 is not about Sarah’s laughter or Hagar’s laughter but it is about the joy and laughter of all those who are in Christ. So, let’s gather together and see how God has made laughter for you and me through His Son, Jesus Christ.

The life of Abraham is a fascinating one because, as we will see, Abraham’s journey was not so much a journey to the land of Canaan but actually a journey towards heaven (see Hebrews 11:16). His destination is not so much an earthly one but a spiritual one. It’s a journey of a fatherless and heirless man into the presence and promise of God. It’s a journey into the very heart of God. God takes a broken family and a broken man and shows him that He will make him into a Father of many nations who reflects the very heart of God the Father Himself.
This is an invitation to all of you to bring your brokenness and join us in our study of the life of Abraham. May the story of Abraham’s journey from brokenness to blessing become the story of all who find the hope of God by faith as he did.
The Question is not: “where do we find Abram in this story?” The Question is: “where does God find Abram in this story?” For this is the story of the mission of God.
The reason for our hope and joy is that we know that our God delights to save people who are lost and broken and far from Him. The story of Abraham is the story of a missional God who goes after the broken and the lost in the nations who have no knowledge of Him or their need of Him. He goes after them to send them after others.
