Why So Much Tearful Teaching

The gospel of Luke concerns what Jesus "began to do and teach" (Acts 1:1). The Acts of the Apostles is Luke’s volume #2. It concerns what Jesus continued to do and teach through his disciples. This second Sunday of missions week we will focus on what Jesus continued to do and teach through his disciples—including us! Teaching the nations is an essential part of the Great Commission. The window through which we will look at the crucial role of teaching is Paul’s ministry in Ephesus. Our passage will be Acts 20:17-38. We will ask the question, “Why so much tearful teaching”? Why did Paul spend three years in Ephesus teaching every day? What did he focus on? What difference does his teaching make in our obedience to the Great Commission, beginning in our homes, our neighborhoods, and extending to the nations? We will illustrate this with the story of a barber from a small village in Cameroon who is now my pastor, my boss and my fellow-teacher in Yaounde, the nations capital.
