“Who’s Got Your Back”?

This Sunday, we studied Genesis 15 and our sermon is entitled “Who’s Got Your Back”? Abram’s just been through the war - literally (see chapter 14). He has had to run and rescue his nephew Lot. Now, you can just sense that he is tired, discouraged, and obviously fearful (see verse 1). Then, God in His mercy meets him where He is at. God ministers to him in his greatest need and eradicates His deepest fears. Do you ever find that when life has worn you down that you are prone to fear and to discouragement? Have you ever had the feeling that you seem to be alone in this? Do you ever find yourself feeling like you are responsible for everyone else in this journey but you don’t know if anyone has got you covered? Abram is about to learn afresh that God has his back big time! The dangers that surround him; the dangers within him; the dangers above him cannot separate him from the God who is for him. Let’s come and study one of the most important passages in the Old Testament.

The life of Abraham is a fascinating one because, as we will see, Abraham’s journey was not so much a journey to the land of Canaan but actually a journey towards heaven (see Hebrews 11:16). His destination is not so much an earthly one but a spiritual one. It’s a journey of a fatherless and heirless man into the presence and promise of God. It’s a journey into the very heart of God. God takes a broken family and a broken man and shows him that He will make him into a Father of many nations who reflects the very heart of God the Father Himself. This is an invitation to all of you to bring your brokenness and join us in our study of the life of Abraham. May the story of Abraham’s journey from brokenness to blessing become the story of all who find the hope of God by faith as he did.
