Where Are the Nine?

This message, from Luke 17:11-19, is called “Where are the Nine?” It is appropriate on Thanksgiving weekend to study a passage where 10 lepers are healed but only one leper, a Samaritan, returns to thank Jesus. Without a doubt, Thanksgiving and the following season of Christmas, are often characterized by many traditions that include the church and religion. People fit Jesus in verbally by saying: “Jesus is the reason for the season.” However, what is striking in this text, and sadly true in our culture, is that God gets a token nod but not true worship. How many cry for mercy in times of crisis but then carry on with life having received relief from their misery? Why is it that only one leper comes back and falls at the feet of Jesus? What about you? What is the true object of your worship? What is the leprosy that goes deeper than our skin that we need Jesus to heal? What is the great reason for our rejoicing? Let’s come and fall at the feet of Jesus on Thanksgiving and rejoice that our true leprosy has been healed by His cross!
