CloseThis advent sermon is taken from John 1:6-13. It’s called “The Life-Giving Light of Christ.” It’s not hard in our current cultural environment to understand how bleak and hopeless people can feel at times. There are seasons in history when entire cultures seem to be shrouded by the pain and sorrow and injustice that dominates their lives. People lose heart and people lose hope. They stop imagining the possibility that things could change for the better. When Isaiah the prophet prophesied the advent (the coming) of the Messiah, he announced it this way in Isaiah 9:2 - “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.” Do you see that? The people dwelt in a land of deep darkness! That’s how the Word of God describes the place and time in which the Messiah would come. As we celebrate the true story of Christmas, the first advent of Christ, let’s be reminded why the good news of light entering our dark world should still give us hope and joy and peace. Christ still gives the light of life in places that have become very dark, joyless, and peaceless. He is the One who can transform impossibly dark and difficult places into places of hope, of life, and of freedom. Have you lost heart and hope that your world can be liberated from the dark? Are you longing for the darkness to dissipate with the light of life? Come and celebrate “The Life-giving Light of Christ."
