The Great Samaritan

This Sunday’s message is called The Great Samaritan. The story of the “Good Samaritan” has to be one of the most known and loved parables that Jesus tells. However, it seems that there is a bit of irony in that the parable was told to humble a self-righteous lawyer who was seeking to find fault with Jesus’ ministry. Self-righteousness has to be one of the greatest obstacles that we face in the mission of the church. Last week, we saw how we battle anxiety as we seek to follow Christ in his mission. This week, we will see how we address the danger of self-righteousness. In a culture of toxic self-righteousness, we all need to be liberated to live the cruciform life not by thinking we are the “good Samaritans” of the world. We can only begin to be what we are called to be as disciples of Christ, when we realize that apart from Jesus, we can do nothing. This parable is impossible for the lawyer and for us. We need a Savior. Read through Luke 10:25-37 and pray for the Holy Spirit to help us be captivated by Jesus and Him alone. (It is, by the way, Pentecost Sunday. Come Holy Spirit.)
