"A New Beginning"

Matthew 1:1-17 starts with a genealogy. As we enter into the Christmas season, we might think that this is not the most exciting passage in the Bible. That is … until you read who belongs to the Messiah’s lineage. There is an old Christmas song, O Little Town of Bethlehem, which has the line, “The hopes and fears of all the years, are met in thee tonight.” As we come out of the long devastating history of Israel in the Old Testament, we discover that God was preparing a new day where all the stories of brokenness and exile are brought together into a brand new and glorious beginning. Our sermon this Sunday is called “A New Beginning”. For people who have languished in sorrow and misery, Jesus Christ has entered the world to offer an unbelievable re-write to their stories. The promises of God to Abraham and to David have not been made in vain. Brokenness and sin don’t have the final say. There is a place for all of us broken people in the genealogy of Jesus. Jesus welcomes the outcast and the destitute, royalty and royal failures into His family line. As we enter the advent season, let’s gather and worship the God who became flesh to make us His sons and daughters.
